Volunteers needed - I Can Fish Program at Jay Cooke State Park

The DNR needs help with their "I Can Fish" program and events for kids at Jay Cooke State Park.  Let me know if you want to go, maybe I can too.  I am leaning towards the June 11th event.

I CHALLENGE ALL OTHER FISHING CLUBS AND LEAGUES TO HELP 1 OR 2 DAYS, IF WE ALL DID THAT WE'LD GET A LOT OF KIDS OUT FISHING.

Email me at doug@uacbass.com if you can help in any way. Thanks

Hi Guys,

Below is the info from the DNR about the I Can Fish program and events for kids that they need help with.  Let me know if you want to go, maybe I can too.  I am leaning towards the June 11th event.

Hi Doug,

I’ll butt in here to Mike Kurre & your conversation if you don’t mind.  I’m the Park Naturalist for Jay Cooke and am the one who coordinates and presents the programming here.

Mike mentioned our weekly I Can Fish program.  This year we’re going to try it on Fridays from 1 – 3 pm, running from June 17th – September 2nd.  We also have a couple scattered fish programs as part of a weekly outdoor rec series we’re presenting.  Sunday June 19th & Sunday August 28th from 1 – 3 pm we’ll do additional I Can Fish programs.  These programs have attracted families with little or no fishing skills.  Each week we teach a short fishing topic program and then take them out on the river shoreline to fish.  Last year we managed to catch fish weekly and every single one was a small mouth bass.  Most of the time is spent helping people with putting on bait, taking fish off and rigging poles as lines get snagged, bobbers get lost, etc.  There is at least one naturalist that helps lead the program each week.

Lastly, on June 11th we have our statewide MN State Park open house day (which is also National Get Outdoors Day).  That day we hold a special event called Outdoor Adventure Day from 11 am – 3 pm.  This event is set up with stations that visitors can come and go to throughout the event and participate in different outdoor rec activities.  So far this year we have an archery, fishing, biking, camp cooking and a “Campsite CSI” station scheduled.

For the weekly I Can Fish program, we’re asking volunteers to commit to coming out at least 3 – 4 times throughout the summer.  We of course would accept additional help.  For the Outdoor Adventure Day, a volunteer could come in to help with a station we already have planned or an organization is welcome to come in and set up a separate station related to sharing outdoor recreational skills with our visitors.

If you have additional questions about these programs or other programming at the park, please feel free to contact me.
